Oscar Reporting by Shelly Vella

February 27 2017

As the spirit of nostalgic cinema gained Oscar recognition, so too the red carpet. Reflecting the prevalent mood for silver screen gowns, the favoured hues were definitely lighter shades of faded gold and silver in floor sweeping, vintage-feel dresses, featuring the kind of glamour, sophistication and grown up cool that even the younger stars gravitated towards.

La La Land Oscar winning Emma Stone wowed in Givenchy Haute Couture – a gorgeous golden column of a dress literally dripping in handworked embroidery and beading.

Dakota Johnson ditched 50 shades of grey and opted for a sexily prim Gucci dress in buttery golden silk satin, not to everyone’s taste but definitely my most favourite dress of the evening.  Saying everything a dress needs to say without showing any flesh at all.

In stark contrast Amy Adams wowed in a whole different way in Tom Ford’s killer plunging neckline sequin gown. Copper haired flaming against the pale gold.

A waterfall of silver beading from the red carpet favourite Marchesa was Olivia Culpo’s dress of choice. Stunningly vintage vibed with a plunging neckline and simple black velvet tied waist.

Fresh off the catwalk this Ralph & Russo is pitch perfect for actress Hailee Steifeld – the right marriage of romantic and just that little bit sheer-thru naughty.

Starkly modern in contrast, Naomi Harris played the two hemline game in Calvin Klein showing off her flawlessly honed figure.

Felicity Jones indulges her inner ballerina in Christian Dior – keeping hair, make up and jewellery to a minimum and letting the dress do the talking.

And finally … high five to Karlie Kloss whose Stella McCartney dress looked every inch the superstar on the red carpet. Sleek, sexy, understated and infinitely elegant.
